Display
and Compatibility
Display
 |
dtSearch
displays retrieved files with highlighted hits in XML, HTML, PDF,
Unicode, ZIP, word processor, database, spreadsheet, email, etc. |
 |
For
HTML and PDF, the result looks just like the original Web-based
document, but with highlighted hits as well as all links and images
intact. |
 |
dtSearch
will automatically un-ZIP and display files within a ZIP archive |
 |
dtSearch
provides multiple 'hit' and file navigation options like "next
hit", "previous hit" and "next document"
to guide the user through the document collection. |
Technical
Note
When dtSearch does an indexed search,
it searches directly on the index that it has built, without reference
to the underlying documents. An unindexed search on the other hand searches
directly through the documents. When it displays a retrieved document,
it refers to the original document, using information in the index to
locate hits. For example, to display a file indexed with the dtSearch
Spider, dtSearch Desktop will return to the Web site to access the document.
|
| dtSearch
returned to www.frb.gov to display this document indexed by
the dtSearch Spider. |
|
dtSearch
displays HTML through a browser interface, including highlighted hits
and fully-functional embedded links and images. PDF documents are displayed
through a combination browser / Adobe Reader interface, showing images
along with highlighted hits.

|
When dtSearch
displays a retrieved document in any other format, it converts it "on-the-fly"
to HTML for browser display with highlighted hits.

Web nested-field search of Shakespeare XML database. |
|
Other
Compatibility
Indexing and searching do not in any way affect
original files. When dtSearch does an
indexed search, it searches directly on the index that it has built.
An unindexed search, in contrast, searches directly through the documents.
When dtSearch
displays a retrieved document, it refers to the original document, using
information in the index to locate hits. Like indexing and searching,
document display does not in any way affect the original files.
 |
dtSearch
generally supports data types such as word processor, database,
spreadsheet, email, PDF, ZIP, HTML, XML and Unicode from current
file formats such as Office 2000 back to legacy file formats. |
 |
For
additional information on XML and other fielded data support, see
Fields. |
 |
dtSearch
indexes, searches and displays unrecognised file formats as binary
text, or through a special proprietary "filtered binary"
option. |
 |
Optional
file segmentation provides for the treatment of long text files
as multiple logical subdocuments (relevant for older legacy data
or other long text files such as logs). |
 |
A
built-in image viewer in dtSearch Desktop and dtSearch Network also
displays popular graphics formats (TIF, GIF, PCX, BMP, JPG, EPS,
etc.). |
