The LAW relies on dtSearch

Image Capture Engineering, Inc. (ICE), is the developer of Legal Access Ware (LAW) legal imaging software. The software is a full-featured legal document scanning solution designed for law firms and service bureaux. Popular features include pop-up menus and easily accessible help information, support for more than 100 scanners, high-speed document numbering, OCR and compatibility with most litigation support applications.

LAW can be broken down into three functional areas: document capture; image processing; and data export or conversion. The document capture process involves scanning and indexing documents and quality control. Image processing involves numbering and/or stamping, OCRing, and printing documents, all of which can be accomplished through a batch process. The final process is the exporting of data. LAW can convert data to a format that is ready to import into many popular legal programs.
"Indexing the resulting OCR files and linking them to the corresponding images couldn't have been easier."
In providing these services, ICE received many requests to embed full-service text search and retrieval functionality into its LAW product. This quest was complicated by the fact that LAW's product generally involved OCR'ed text. As ICE noted on its Web site: "Some customers seem to have the belief that if they perform OCR on their images, all the information will be read, indexed and easily found. Unfortunately, this is not the case. Even the best OCR engines are not perfect. Broken letters, multiple generations of copies, handwriting and many other variables can contribute to OCR mistakes." So, ICE needed a solution that was ideal for sifting through these types of OCR mistakes.

For its solution, ICE chose the dtSearch Electronic Publisher's Toolkit. "With several CD publishing and full-text search engines on the market, the ICE application engineers reviewed various applications for indexing speed, search speed, accuracy and search options," said Jon Rowe, Vice President of ICE. "After several test projects ICE determined that dtSearch was the hands down winner."

Not only was dtSearch Electronic Publisher's Toolkit the best solution, but it was also the easiest to implement. "ICE purchased the dtSearch Toolkit and designed an 'export utility' around the dtSearch runtime software. The export utility allowed users to easily combine OCR data, database information, images and the dtSearch runtime files and indexes on to CD's." Added Mr. Rowe: "The dtSearch Toolkit was easy to use and we were able to complete our export utility in just a few hours."

Finally, the dtSearch Electronic Publisher's Toolkit provided ICE with the full range of search features that it needed. "We were amazed at how much quicker and more 'intelligent' the dtSearch engine was when searching through tens of thousands of OCR'ed pages," said Mr. Rowe. "Indexing the resulting OCR files and linking them to the corresponding images couldn't have been easier. dtSearch can automatically recognise which image files belong to the resulting OCR files without having to load the information into a database table. Most of the functions are easily handled using batch processing functions and shell commands."

"We are very happy that ICE is including dtSearch Electronic Publisher's Toolkit with its product," said Elizabeth Thede, Vice President of Sales of dtSearch Corp. "Getting from documents to searchable text is one of the most important features in today's litigation environment. By outputting that text in an easily searchable format on CD, ICE is performing a very valuable service to the litigation community."
