Rare
Medium Makes dtSearch Part of Web Solution
Rare Medium Inc. is an Internet solutions firm. It helps
clients develop and implement e-business applications
that re-engineer processes and improve business efficiency
and marketing efforts. Rare Medium needed a text retrieval
engine to work in a site it had developed - www.tutopia.com.
Developed for the IFX corporation, the site is a multi-city
guide serving major cities in Latin America such as
Mexico City, Buenos Aires, and Santiago de Chile.
The
site included a document management system called Documatic
developed by Rare Medium. Implemented as a set of components
for sites served by Microsoft IIS Web Servers, Documatic
is a highly flexible and customisable solution for developing
and administering complex Web sites, such as those with
constantly changing or time-sensitive content. Documatic
allows non-technical staff and content managers without
Web development experience to create new content for
sites with the use of plain-English customised templates,
and to publish these documents to a live site. Rare
Medium needed a text search and retrieval engine to
integrate with Documatic on the Tutopia site.

To do searching on the Tutopia Web site, Rare Medium chose
the dtSearch Text Retrieval Engine. Rare Medium integrated
the dtSearch Engine into Documatic for indexing documents
as they are created and allowing end users to find documents
throughout the site, by city and by category such as restaurants,
arts, theatre, etc.
"The dtSearch Engine provided enough flexibility
to work in the complex environment of our Web Server farm
and within the context of other COM objects used by our
system," said Michael Uffer, Technical Manager of
Rare Medium. The site required searching through large
amounts of data separated into separate indexes by city.
Rare Medium created each article and listing in a structured
XML format which provided advanced categorisation of data
such as location of event, price, date, etc.
"The dtSearch Engine interfaces were straightforward
and easy to work with. Their native support for XML made
indexing simple and efficient," said Mr. Uffer. Rare
Medium used the dtSearch Engine to index this data so
users could find events and articles easily. Users could
also narrow their searches by having the system build
more complex queries based on context.

from the issues of information design to complex COM programming
